Going back to 2003

Not weeping yet
Now for some photos from past Passion plays. The Good Friday Passion Play at the Shrine of Our lady of Mercy at Penrose Park has been held for over 25 years! We have only been going and participating in the play since 2003 - just 14 years or so.
As you can see from these memories and others we will post in future the play is open to everyone, young and old. Many girls and women simply join in as "The Weeping Women" who sing "Hosanna!" as Jesus enters Jerusalem, watch as he is brought before the High Priest and Pontius Pilate, cry out to Jesus during the "Way of the Cross" and then watch at the crucifixion. In costume, some acting, walking, participating in The Passion - Yep, that sounds pretty enjoyable to me!

Jesus waiting with his Apostles to enter Jerusalem
We have had a number of brave men who have played Jesus over the years. It is the toughest role to play, not just because of all the lines to remember, but Jesus is the centre of attention in all but one scene - and in that scene he is the subject of discussion. Can you guess what that scene is?

The weather in Autumn is variable. It can be hot or cold, wet or dry, windy or still. But the play must go on. Somehow, the heavy rains have always held off during the play itself. Also, the weather doesn't stop thousands of spectators travelling long distances to take part.
